Supporting Each Other
What do you do if someone reaches out to you for support during the pandemic? Your coworkers, friends, and family may all be experiencing anxiety and distress. These conversations can sometimes be difficult to manage or navigate. To support them, try the following active listening strategies:
DO | DON’T |
Listen and offer to help find resources | Give advice or attempt to help solve the problem unless invited to |
Be empathetic | Assume you know what the person is feeling |
Describe what you’re hearing from them in your own words | Try to relate by sharing your own stories |
Validate their feelings and concerns | Ask leading or “why questions” |
Provide resources and information that you are aware of if requested | Accept hostility, threats, or abuse |
