Many service agencies have expressed an increase rate of people accessing their services, and racialized youth are no exception. Faced with such great uncertainties and challenges, Asian youth may be struggling with issues that many of us are not aware of, whether it be mentally, emotionally, socially, and physically. On the other hand, youth may also be equipped with resilience strategies that we are also unaware of that may be worth exploring for all of us to learn and grow from.

This week, we will discuss some of the issues that Asian youth are facing during this pandemic and some of the approaches that the youth along with youth workers are using to develop resilience and transform.

About Speakers:

Joyce Chiu

Joyce is a Chinese-Canadian working with youth in Toronto and York Region. She is particularly interested in the ways which race and culture influence access to mental health care. She is passionate about providing opportunities for youth to explore who they are, their social identities, and to share their lived experiences. She is currently a Youth Program Worker at Hong Fook Mental Health Association, where she focuses on building resilience, social connections, and community initiatives for East Asian youth

Kishuan Espiritu

Kishuan is a coordinator/facilitator at SYU who teaches computer programming as well as informing youth about various gender-related issues. Currently, he is a project coordinator for a Needs Assessment Survey that aims to identify the unique needs of POC high school students and what SYU as an organization can do to provide support for those needs. 

Coly Chau

Coly researches, writes and facilitates on race, migration, gender, sexuality and media. She has a background working in educational settings within community, post-secondary and non-profit sectors. Coly learns, works and organizes alongside others towards decolonial and liberatory futures. 

Kishuan Espiritu and Coly Chau are Scarborough Youth United (SYU) core committee members. Together, they co-mentored summer camp students as part of a Social Action Project on homophobic and transphobic bullying.

2. Ensure minimal background noises and movement
3. Dress appropriately. Participants must be fully clothed during the session
4. Ensure that anything shown on the camera is appropriate and not offensive
5. When turning on your cameras to use the video option, only show the upper portion of your body (head, neck, shoulders)
6. Do not take screenshots of conversations here
7. Be courteous and respectful of other participants’
8. If anyone is consciously disrespectful of others and does not take accountability, they will be removed and banned
