The Toronto Zoo is set to receive 320 COVID-19 vaccine doses, according to a press release Tuesday.
The zoo plans to give 146 animals two doses each of a COVID-19 vaccine for animals. Doses will be administered two to three weeks apart and animals have been trained to voluntarily participate in vaccination.
“The health and safety of our animals is our top priority, and we will continue to do everything we can to provide them with the highest level of medical care throughout their entire lives,” the release said.
“This includes vaccinating them when they are first born as a preventive measure and also providing them with new vaccines to fight COVID-19.”
The Toronto Zoo has not reported any positive cases of COVID-19 in their animals to date.
The vaccine was developed by animal health company Zoetis, a former subsidiary of vaccine maker Pfizer.
According to the statement, the Assiniboine Park Zoo in Winnipeg, Man. has received doses and has begun vaccinating their animals. Naylor confirmed the Calgary Zoo, Granby Zoo in Montreal and Vancouver Aquarium are also waiting for vaccines from Zoetis.
Naylor said the Toronto Zoo did not know the exact date they would receive the vaccines.
