The Toronto District School Board says it will provide medical grade masks to every one of its students.
During a regular board meeting on Wednesday night, the trustees approved a motion to purchase Level 3 medical grade masks for distribution at all of its schools.
“Medical masks can be cost-prohibitive for many families. By providing medical masks, the TDSB is ensuring that all students have access to high-quality PPE and greater protection against COVID-19,” said TDSB chair Alexander Brown.
The board says students can continue to wear their own masks as outlined in the TDSB’s COVID-19 Mask Procedure, but they will also have access to one of the new Level 3 grade masks per day until the end of the school year should they wish to wear them.
As part of its return to school plan, the Ford government is providing more than four million high quality three ply masks to students and more than 10 million optional non-fit-tested N95 masks to education and child care staff.
The move is expected to cost the TDSB between $444,000 and $2 million, depending on the number of masks purchased and used by students.
“As the Ministry of Education will not be funding the purchase of medical masks for students, this cost will need to be supported through the TDSB’s reserve funds,” the board said.
However Brown stressed they will continue to urge the Ministry of Education to fully fund and reimburse school boards for all pandemic costs, including providing medical masks for students.
