On behalf of the Federal Anti-Racism Secretariat, we are pleased to invite you to the Government of Canada’s first Emancipation Day in Canada commemorative event. This event will be broadcasted live on Facebook on Sunday, August 1, 2021 from 2 pm EDT.
While there cannot be in-person activities for the first year of the official national Emancipation Day commemorative event, we have prepared this virtual production. This official commemoration will invite all communities in Canada to take a moment to reflect on the past, to mark the day the Slavery Abolition Act took effect in 1834 in British North America, which is now known as Canada.
We invite you to share this invitation with your families, friends and networks.
Special guests featured in this commemorative event include:·
- Prime Minister, the Rt. Honourable Justin Trudeau·
- Minister of Diversity and Inclusion and Youth, the Honourable Bardish Chagger·
- Senators Wanda Thomas Bernard and Rosemary Moodie ·
- Dr. Afua Cooper, Historian and Professor of Black Studies, Dalhousie University·
