The Chinese and Southeast Asian Legal Clinic is pleased to announce the hiring of its new permanent Executive Director, Ada Chan [陳可盈], who will start on November 15, 2021.
Ada was called to the Bar in 2010, and most of her career has been at Legal Aid Ontario as a Duty Counsel, first for family law and then for criminal law. She is fluent in Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin). Ada also knows CSALC from her involvement as a former member of the Board of Directors.
Ada will be only the third executive director of CSALC in its 34-year history. Founding Clinic Director Gary Yee (1987-1992) returned temporarily to the legal clinic in August 2021, after the departure of Avvy Go, who had been a tireless and powerful advocate for 29 years, until her appointment to the Federal Court.
Jason Huang-Kung, Chair of the Board of Directors, said: “The Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Ada Chan will be leading our clinic into a new era as its new Executive Director. Ada brings to our clinic a wealth of experience advocating for low-income persons in Ontario and new ideas on how best to serve our communities. We look forward to working with Ada in championing social justice in Ontario.”
Gary Yee, Interim Executive Director, said: “It’s been an honour to serve the legal clinic again, 34 years after my life was changed by taking on this position in 1987. I have been heartened by the continuing dedication of our staff, and I thank them for all their support and hard work. I’m excited to work with Ada in the upcoming transition, as we launch CSALC into a new period that builds on its decades of service.”
