While the province has dropped most COVID-19 public health measures, some cities, including the City of Toronto, are keeping the mandatory vaccination policy in place for employees.
“The vaccination mandate/policy that said that City [of Toronto] workers should be fully vaccinated remains in place and it will remain in place,” Mayor John Tory said on Breakfast Television on Wednesday.
Employees with the City who have been working from home are expected back in the office by March 21.
“Those who were in office jobs who might have worked from home, we’ve got them coming back to work voluntarily now. March 21 is the day they’re expected back to work,” Tory said.
Most COVID-19 public health measures have now been lifted in the province, which also means Toronto Public Health has revoked a number of orders, including requiring workplaces to notify Public Health of an outbreak. The City has also ended its self-isolation class order.
A number of other municipalities are also keeping their staff vaccination policies, including the City of Mississauga and York Region.
A spokesperson for York Region said maintaining the employee vaccine mandate is consistent with the municipality’s obligations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Outside of the GTA, the City of Windsor and the Town of Clarington also said their employee vaccine mandates will stay in place.
